  This is a question I try to answer in my most recent book, Buying Buddha, Selling Rumi: Orientalism and the Mystical Marketplace. The search for enchantment in the modern world is often characterized by dilettantism—a meditation retreat in the desert surrounding Santa Fe, a vacation in Bali, a subscription to a New Age magazine. Virtual Orientalism is a good example of the theoretical gymnastic and pyrotechnic consequences of employing critical Asian American Studies perspectives in the study of religion at the intersection of religion and race. Although this reviewer would have liked more development in the historical and geopolitical discussion in each of the three case.
